Storage Tips

It's important to properly prepare your items for storage. Place all smaller items in uniformly sized boxes. Uniformly sized boxes stacked easier in concert storage space. Completely fill each box with heavier items on the bottom and lighter items on the top and label boxed items so you'll know what is in each box without having to open it.

Pack books flat not standing on ends. This will protect the spines which will bend over time if stood upright. Pack books in small boxes and don't pack them along with more fragile items.

Drain gasoline and oil from all small engines. This will protect both yours and others property from the dangers of fire and explosion.

Place mattresses IN plastic covers to protect them from dust and moisture.

Leather items

Treat leather items such as couches, clothes, etc. with a leather conditioner prior storing them. Keep furniture off the floor by placing it on pallets.

Clean blankets, draperies, and clothing prior to storage, then pack them on hangers in wardrobe boxes.

Photos

Photographs tend to curl over time. Keep them flat by placing them between pieces of cardboard and taping them together. Do not store irreplaceable photos. Photos of negatives take a very little space and should be kept with you.

Wrap breakable items inside bubble wrap and store it with linens. Do not store liquid items over the winter. Items such as snow globes will freeze and break.

Boats

Do Not Store

Furs, jewelry, irreplaceable items, any living thing, used tires, firearms, explosives, flammables, drugs and drug paraphernalia, stolen items, any type of hazardous items, perishable items, hazardous waste materials, anything that may produce odors or attract bugs or rodents.

Organizing Your Unit

Use wooden pallets with boards underneath furniture and boxes to prevent condensation.


Leave small air space between your stored items and the wall of the storage unit for ventilation.


 Store items that will not be needed to the rear of the storage unit and items you will need access to toward the front. Store heavy items on the bottom and lightweight items on the top.


Cover everything with plastic sheeting. Wooden furniture should be covered first with blankets to avoid abrasion and moisture damage. Plastic sheeting will protect your property from both dust and water damage.


Pack your storage unit as tightly as possible. This can help protect stored items from moisture and dust. It also reduces the space needed to store your property.
